About this role
Define the long-term architecture and modernization strategy for GitLab’s Fulfillment platform, which manages customer access, licensing, seats, usage, and spend across deployment models. What you'll do
- Set Fulfillment’s long-term architecture, technical strategy, and migration priorities.
- Assess and address platform risks in scalability, reliability, performance, data correctness, and maintainability.
- Define service boundaries, data ownership, contracts, and integration patterns across related systems.
- Lead incremental modernization while continuing to deliver customer and business value.
- Partner with engineering, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to turn strategy into roadmaps and shipped outcomes.
- Work hands-on on critical designs, implementations, migrations, performance, reliability, and incident learning.
- Promote responsible AI adoption, including agentic coding and AI-assisted engineering workflows.
- Mentor Senior and Staff Engineers and improve technical decision-making across the organization.
What we're looking for
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including substantial Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leadership experience.
- Experience building, operating, or modernizing fulfillment systems such as entitlements, licensing, provisioning, subscriptions, metering, or usage billing.
- Track record of setting technical direction across multiple teams and delivering reliable, operated systems.
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, availability, performance, observability, data integrity, and failure analysis.
- Comfort working with Ruby, Go, or Python and navigating backend and frontend systems.
- Practical experience with AI-assisted software engineering, including agentic coding or AI development workflows.
- Experience incrementally modernizing mature platforms rather than relying on a big-bang rewrite.
- Experience designing systems across deployment models such as SaaS, Self-Managed, Dedicated, or disconnected environments.
