About this role

Build and lead Tailscale’s release management practices, coordinating how software is shipped internally and to customers. Establish release cadence, readiness criteria, tooling, and operational metrics while keeping processes low-friction and helping teams maintain their pace.

About the company

Tailscale builds a zero-config mesh VPN on WireGuard so teams can securely connect devices, servers, and cloud resources without traditional VPN complexity.

What you'll do

  • Design and improve release cadence, readiness criteria, rollout coordination, and go/no-go decisions
  • Create and maintain release tooling, templates, runbooks, and documentation
  • Partner with engineering and product leads to surface and resolve risks early
  • Define and track metrics such as release frequency and change failure rate
  • Facilitate cross-team planning to keep releases on schedule
  • Drive data-informed operational improvements

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years in engineering operations, release management, or a related role at a software company
  • Experience building or significantly improving release management processes
  • Technical fluency with build systems, deployment pipelines, branching strategies, and production operations
  • Good judgment about which processes add value and how to earn team trust and adoption
  • Comfort with ambiguity and building structure from scratch

Nice to have

  • Experience with both client and server software releases
  • Experience at a developer tools, infrastructure, or security-focused SaaS company
  • Familiarity with DORA metrics
  • Experience with feature flags, progressive rollouts, or canary deployments
  • Experience scaling operations during rapid growth
  • Hands-on experience with Tailscale

Benefits

  • Equity incentive plan
  • Remote-first work and coworking support
  • Employer retirement contributions matched up to 0.75% of eligible compensation
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Annual professional development budget of $1,500
  • Home office setup budget of $500 and monthly internet reimbursement
  • Paid parental leave: 20 weeks for birthing parents and 16 weeks for non-birthing parents
  • Health, vision, and dental coverage
