About this role

Build and deploy production-grade AI agents that automate customers’ payroll tax and compliance workflows. The role spans technical sales discovery, solution scoping, hands-on implementation, and customer handoff, with success measured by live deployments and reduced manual work.

About the company

Gusto is a digital platform that provides payroll, benefits, and human resource management solutions for small to medium-sized businesses. The company focuses on simplifying HR processes and ensuring compliance, while also offering tools for employee engagement and retirement planning.

What you'll do

  • Assess technical feasibility and scope compliance solutions for enterprise sales opportunities.
  • Gather requirements and build proofs of concept for customer workflows.
  • Write and deploy production code, including agentic and multi-agent systems.
  • Resolve data quality, jurisdiction mapping, and tax ID reconciliation issues.
  • Develop business cases based on time saved, risk reduced, and simplified compliance.
  • Align customer stakeholders and internal teams as requirements change.
  • Create runbooks and implementation playbooks for repeatable deployments.
  • Share customer and deployment feedback with product and go-to-market teams.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a customer-facing technical role.
  • Experience shipping production systems in ambiguous, client-facing environments.
  • Knowledge of REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, authentication, data modeling, idempotency, and failure modes.
  • Production experience in regulated domains and sufficient payroll, tax, or compliance knowledge to engage with compliance teams.
  • Experience with production agentic workflows, MCP or function-calling patterns, and evaluation and reliability practices.
  • Strong technical discovery, solution-scoping, and business-case development skills.
  • Ability to communicate with and influence technical and executive audiences.

Nice to have

  • Experience integrating with an HR or payroll platform.
  • Enterprise procurement or security review experience.
  • Familiarity with MEDDPICC-style sales frameworks.

Benefits

  • Equity in the form of RSUs.
