What you'll do
- Counsel teams on regulations and standards covering content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, and data security
- Provide product and privacy advice for web hosting, publishing, ecommerce, social media, and advertising products
- Track emerging regulations and represent Automattic in industry groups and before regulators
- Develop trust and safety policies that balance freedom of expression, user safety, and legal requirements
- Build scalable workflows for compliance and privacy requirements
What we're looking for
- JD from an accredited US law school and 5+ years of relevant experience, or an exception EU-based attorney
- Familiarity with Automattic-relevant industries and business models, including open source, user-generated content, hosting, social media, ecommerce, and digital advertising
- Able to work independently and asynchronously while collaborating as a teammate
- Comfortable making clear recommendations with imperfect information
Nice to have
- Experience with the DSA, UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, EU AI Act, or age-assurance laws
- Expertise in GDPR, CCPA, or digital marketing and advertising consent frameworks
- Willingness to stretch into litigation or intellectual property work
