Staff Backend Software Engineer - Loki

About this role

Build and operate Loki, Grafana Labs’ distributed, multi-tenant log database, offered as open-source software and as part of Grafana Cloud. The role involves owning reliability and performance, delivering customer-facing improvements, and contributing to the project’s open-source ecosystem.

Grafana Labs builds open-source and commercial observability tools for metrics, logs, and traces, centered on Grafana dashboards. It helps teams monitor infrastructure and applications and investigate incidents.

Databases team, responsible for Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope.

Stack

What you'll do

• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems.
• Drive projects from ideation through customer release and ongoing operations.
• Contribute to open-source projects and participate in on-call rotations.
• Mentor teammates and contribute to design discussions.

What we're looking for

• Experience with at least one programming language; familiarity with Go, Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar is relevant.
• Experience delivering software projects from requirements through customer release.
• Experience developing cloud software or in systems engineering.
• Ability to write clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in a remote team.

Nice to have

• Experience with low-level database, storage, or query-engine code.
• Kubernetes experience.
• Operational experience with Grafana or Prometheus.
• Exposure to microservices and distributed systems.
• Experience with on-call, SRE operations, or infrastructure as code.
