What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain the OpenTelemetry Python SDK and instrumentation libraries in collaboration with upstream contributors.
  • Build instrumentation for AI agents, model calls, and tool execution, including asynchronous workflows.
  • Benchmark and improve Python SDK performance while balancing overhead, compatibility, and maintainability.
  • Help shape OpenTelemetry conventions for generative AI, accounting for sensitive data and metric cardinality.
  • Set technical direction, own projects end to end, and mentor others.

What we're looking for

  • 8+ years of software development experience and strong Python proficiency.
  • Experience debugging production software, libraries, language internals, and asynchronous code.
  • Interest in AI applications and agent systems.
  • Experience with open-source communities and willingness to contribute to OpenTelemetry.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry.
