Staff Software Engineer, Payments Intelligence

About this role

Set technical direction across Stripe’s Payment Intelligence products, spanning fraud prevention, payment optimization, disputes, authentication, and merchant analytics. Build and improve high-scale, distributed systems on the payments critical path while partnering with merchants and product, design, and ML teams.

What you'll do

• Define technical strategy across multiple Payment Intelligence products, focusing on quality and performance
• Establish engineering standards, tooling, and processes to support high-quality software at scale
• Partner with large merchants to develop payment intelligence products
• Collaborate with product, design, and ML colleagues
• Contribute across infrastructure, foundational systems, frontend, APIs, and ML-adjacent work

What we're looking for

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in strategic technical leadership
• Experience leading teams working on distributed systems, API design, and user-facing products
• Track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that drive business growth
• Able to lead projects strategically and contribute hands-on
• Strong communication and cross-team collaboration skills

Nice to have

• Payments or fraud-detection experience
• Production ML systems experience, including serving, training pipelines, observability, or evaluation
• Experience building a product from concept to production
• Experience with the listed languages, frameworks, and data tools
• Comfort making and revising technical decisions in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
